KMTV Channel 3 and keynote speaker Tom Osborne recognized and honored our 2016 Hometown Heroes Award recipients for their impressive and extraordinary efforts in the community.
Abide
In 1989, the Dotzler family founded Abide and has been working toward their vision that one day Omaha would have no inner city. Providing a holistic approach that focuses on developing healthy neighborhoods through community building, family support programs, housing and partnerships, the successful results of the Abide are abundant. They have created several community centers, hosted grill-outs and block parties, gained the trust of people in the neighborhoods, and created a sense of community in once inner city neighborhoods.
Bill and Evonne Williams
Bill and Evonne Williams are co-founders of Patriotic Productions, a non-profit organization that honors the sacrifices of United States Military members. Patriotic Productions organizes and raises funds for honor flights so that Nebraska and Iowa veterans can visit war memorials in Washington DC. Together they have created a traveling photo memorial to honor those who have died serving our country since 9/11, and they began the Gold Star Kids Event which acknowledges the loss children face when a parent makes the ultimate sacrifice.
Shelley Henderson
Through Shelley Henderson’s community-oriented professions and extensive volunteer work, she has made a difference in the lives of youth and adults during a time of racial and economic turmoil in our country. Her peaceful and calm demeanor and humble approach in the community has led to a wide range of leadership roles throughout the Omaha community, to include My Brother’s Keeper and READY. She is a constant advocate for students who are disenfranchised by systems of inequity and works tirelessly seeking results.
